Leon County Jail Escape: UPDATE: In Custody – 08/12/21

On Friday, August 6th in the morning hours, two Leon County Sheriff’s Office jail inmates, that were assigned to work crew, (Kevin Kahler who was in LCSO charged with Burglary of a Building- Felony and Kevin Webb W/M charged with Possession of Controlled substance- Felony and Evading Arrest- Misdemeanor) are believed to have stolen a Leon County Precinct 2 truck and drove to Conroe, Texas. The truck was recovered in a store parking lot. The Conroe Police Department took the report of another stolen vehicle near there, the same day. That vehicle was involved in the Assault of a DPS Trooper and an ensuing manhunt for the suspect in the area of Neches, Texas in Anderson County. The owner of the truck reported that a .45 caliber pistol was in the truck at the time it was stolen. Escapee Kevin Webb is a suspect in the stolen vehicle and assault of the Trooper and is still at large. Kevin Kahler, the other inmate is still also at large.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is working diligently with their partners the Texas Rangers, Lone Star, Gulf Coast and East Texas Fugitive Task Forces as well as TDCJ and other agencies, to get the two escapees back into custody. The fugitives will have additional charges of Escape and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle added to their current charges in Leon County and other charges in other jurisdictions.

The Sheriff’s Office makes no excuses for the inmates escaping and takes full responsibility for the incident. On 8/12/2021, members of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, and the Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force arrested Escapee Kevin Kahler at a hotel in Brenham, Texas. The arrest was made due to the tireless efforts of members of these agencies. Sheriff Ellis would like to thank the US Marshals, Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force, Fort Bend County, Austin County, The Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Public Safety CID, Office of the Inspector General, and the Brenham Police Department for their assistance in the investigation and apprehension of Kahler. Kahler was transported to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office Jail, where he was booked on the charge of Escape.
On 8/12/2021, Kevin Webb was arrested in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The Garland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tip that he was in the area and were able to apprehend the suspect.
