Lola Winstead Coker Kirkley was born on September 11, 1924 in Marquez, Texas to Samuel and Martha Winstead. She was the youngest of eight children. She grew up on a farm in Marquez and had to walk three miles to school. During her senior year, she quit school because her mother could not afford to buy her class ring for $10.49; hers was the only one that had to go back. She married Jerome C. Coker, Sr. in 1941. They had three children; son, Jerome C. Coker, Jr. (1942), daughter, Marilyn Jo Coker (1944), and son, Roger Dale Coker (1951). The family moved to Houston in 1943 and Lola worked for Henke & Pilot for several years until they moved to Odessa. She was a supervisor for Sears Supermarket for thirteen years. She moved to Dallas in 1967 and was Store Manager for Margo’s Dress Shop for nineteen years before retiring in 1985. Lola loved to cook, sew, crochet, and dress dolls. She loved her dolls like they were her children; she had over 150 dolls. Lola loved working in the yard and had a beautiful yard. She loved her family very much and had wonderful neighbors who would visit and enjoy something that she baked. But most of all she loved her Lord and her church and was an active member of Wilshire Baptist Church, serving through the sewing ministry and Touch Ministry, along with Wednesday Bible Study until her health began to fail. After living alone for fifty-one years, she met the love of her life, John Walton Kirkley. She was 85 and he was 83 years old when they married. They were so happy together and had a wonderful life. She loved people and loved hosting friends at her home. She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.
