Alvin Thane, age 84, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at his home in Centerville. He was born February 22, 1936 in Navasota, Texas to German immigrants, Fritz & Minnie (Hemann) Thane. Alvin was raised in Navasota with his seven siblings and graduated from Navasota High School. He soon joined the U.S. Army where he served overseas in Germany.
Alvin retired as an operator from Houston Light and Power after over thirty years of service. In 1979, he moved to Centerville where he spent much of his time caring for his house and property. Anyone who came to visit Alvin’s park-like property soon realized that he was an avid gardener and landscaper. His lawn was always kept immaculate and it was apparent he spent many hours pulling weeds and taking care of his plants and shade trees. This was what made Alvin content and happy. Seeing the deer and other wildlife come and graze on the grass in the evening was a great reward for Alvin’s hard work.
Alvin was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Centerville until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; wives, Audrey Thane and Irmgard Thane and siblings, Selma Busse, Edwin Thane, Fred Thane, Wilbert Thane and Roy Thane. Surviving family members include son, Bobby (Patty) Eckhoff; daughters, Karen “Suzie” (Allen) Hill, Laurie (Steve) Ferguson and Lana Nicholson; sisters, Nelda Shives and Rosie Joswiak; thirteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Alvin was held 11 A.M., Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Centerville, Texas. Pastor Keith Bowman officiated. Alvin was laid to rest in Centerville Cemetery, Centerville, Texas.
Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas was in charge of arrangements.
