Lady Cougars are State 2A Runner Up

The Lady Cougars were defeated on Friday, November 22 by the Crawford Pirates. The season ended for both teams at the UIL State Volleyball Tournament in Garland. Crawford completed a season that saw them at the top of the TGCA poll for most of the year. After Leon’s district win in Iola, the Lady Cougars moved to the second spot in the poll for the remainder of the season, and that’s how the 2019 season ended. Crawford at number 1 and Leon in the number 2 spot.

Crawford won the match in 3 sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-20. It was a close, well-played match, but Leon just wasn’t able to gain an advantage in any of the sets. The Lady Cougars accepted the State 2A Runner-Up trophy and posed for a photo with strained smiles and tears in their eyes, but despite the final game loss, Leon amassed a 43-6 season record and completed an amazing season of volleyball.

Congratulations to the team, coaches, managers and everyone who assisted in this historic season. To the many fans of this team, these Lady Cougars will always be Number 1.

As the broth-in-law of long time coach Billy Bob Evans, I try to follow the team as much as I can. Way to go ladies, great season and I look forward to an even better one next season…
