Anna Belle Sanders

Age 92

October 14, 2019, will be a day long remembered by family and friends of Anna Belle (Mathews) Sanders because that is the date that she was transported to her heavenly home. After ninety-two years of time well spent being a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, elementary school teacher, and church member, her earthly body succumbed to wear and tear, she quietly moved to her new home.

Born in Jewett on January 3, 1927, the fourth child of John Wesley and Annie Simons Mathews, Anna Belle attended schools in Leon County and graduated from Jewett High School in 1945. Shortly thereafter, she met Rex Sanders, newly returned to the county after forty-one months as a World War II Japanese Prisoner of War. They married on January 28, 1946. Their early years together were spent at various Air Force Bases, and in 1952 they were sent to West Germany with their two children, Carol Ann (age 5) and Rex M. (Butch) (age 2). After three and a half years, they returned to the U.S. to spend the remainder of Rex’s service time. In 1959, the family moved to their retirement home in Jewett, TX, and Anna Belle remained in Jewett until her declining health resulted in assisted living closer to family.

Most notably, Anne Belle started college classes at the same time as her younger child. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor’s Degree, then a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught at Leon Elementary School for twenty-three years before retiring in 1992.

In addition to her own family, Anne Belle enjoyed her church family. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the church choir, and served on numerous committees. Anna Belle was not only a Believer, also a Follower of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband Rex, her daughter, Carol Beddingfield and her son-in-law, Bobby Beddingfield.

She will be missed by her son, Rex M. (Butch) Sanders & wife Judy; six grandchildren, LeAnn Sanders Hill, Jay Beddingfield, Kyle Sanders, Jody Beddingfield, Lindy Sanders Wagner, and Jana Beddingfield Goss and their spouses; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial services for Anna Belle Sanders will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Jewett. Bro. Allen Crosby will officiate. A reception for family and friends will follow the services in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
