Jessica Watson Turner has accepted the position of Leon Girls Athletic Director and head volleyball coach for the 2018-2019 school year. She fills the position left by Jason Evans upon his resignation last month. Coach Turner isn’t a stranger to Leon I.S.D. or volleyball. She graduated in 2002 as valedictorian and played under Coach Billy Evans on the 2000 State Championship team and then with Coach Teresa Sitton on the 2001 State Runner-up team.
“I can’t say enough how excited I am to be here,” she said. “You know they always say, there is no place like home, and Leon is just that for me.”
Jessica received a full scholarship to Texas Tech and played two years in the Big 12 conference, earning “Newcomer of the Year.” She then transferred to Stephen F. Austin, again on a full scholarship, to help her team win Conference Championships in the Southland Conference for the two years she was there.
Coach Turner moved on to start her coaching career as assistant to Susan Brewer at Bellville and to Kate Barnett at Franklin, with both schools advancing to regional playoffs. In 2008 she assumed the head coach position at Franklin taking her team to regional playoffs five times. She received four District Coach of the Year honors.
Coach Turner has already begun to get acquainted with her Lady Cougar volleyball team.
“We just finished the first half of summer workouts with a great turn out of kids working hard everyday to get better,” she said. “I’m already proud of them for showing up and giving such tremendous effort, and cannot wait to see what we can do once we hit the court.”
The first day of official practice is August 1, with the Lady Cougars’ first scrimmage on August 3 against China Spring in the Leon Gym.
“This is going to be a spectacular season and one you definitely will not want to miss,” Coach Turner said.
