Funeral services for Durwood Bottoms were held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home in Jewett. Bro. Allen Crosby will officiated. Interment followed the services at Sardis Cemetery.
Mr. Bottoms passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018, in Houston.
Durwood Ferris Bottoms was born July 22, 1923 to J.J. and Nettie Martin Bottoms in Newby, Texas. One of seven sons, he grew up on the family farm graduating from Jewett High School. In 1943, wanting to serve his country during WWII, Durwood enlisted in the Navy.
After the Navy, Durwood owned a grocery store in Houston before becoming employed by Gulf Oil Corporation at the refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. After thirty-two years he retired from Gulf Oil in 1983 and began to enjoy life with his wife, Louise. During their years of retirement they enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling in their RV. They were so proud to have visited every state within the continental United States including five trips to Alaska. Durwood was a dedicated member of Jewett Masonic Lodge No. 427 AF&AM for 72 years where he served as Worshipful Master. Masonry was an important part of his life. In 2001, he was honored to serve the Grand Lodge of Texas as District Deputy Grand Master District 24. Durwood was also a member of Buffalo Chapter No. 157 Order of the Eastern Star where he was a Past Patron having served with his wife Louise.
He is survived by four daughters, Barbara King of Helena, Arkansas, Terri Rozell of Humble, Texas, Debbie Wood and husband Billy of Jewett, Texas, and Glenda Fitzpatrick and husband David of Kountze, Texas; twelve grandchildren, Jason Bottoms, Jay King, Julie Paul, Jaelyn Pelligren, Trenton King, Wynnette Taylor, DeAnn Morton, Glenna Woods, Angela Faterkowski, Wayne Hall, Jr., Lee Wood, and Alan Wood; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Dale Bottoms, Jack Bottoms & wife June, and Paul Bottoms, all of Jewett; and numerous nieces and nephews. All who love him and miss him.
Durwood was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; parents, J.J. and Nettie Bottoms; two sons, Durwood Ferris Bottoms, Jr., and Wayne Hall; and three brothers, James Earl Bottoms, Ennis Odell Bottoms, and Joe Jeryl Bottoms.
The family wishes to thank Brookdale-CyFair for their loving care of Durwood during the last year of his life.
