Martha Pearl Smith passed away at the Windsor Westlake Healthcare Center in Thousand Oaks, CA, on March 12, 2018.
Martha Newsom was born with red, curly hair on a farm near Marquez, Texas, on March 16, 1926, the second of four children of Clark and Edna Newsom.
Martha lived in Leon County, Texas, until she graduated from high school in 1943 and moved to Houston where she met and married Emitt McGee in 1945. They had three daughters; Patricia, Brenda and Karen. Emitt died in an automobile accident in 1963. Martha then worked as a secretary for McKesson and Robbins drug company where she married her boss, Pat Smith, in 1969. He died in 1988.
Martha always had many friends and “never met a stranger.” She loved reading and traveling with her sister, especially to school reunions and on road trips and cruises.
Martha worked in the Houston area as an apartment rental manager until she was eighty-four. At that time she had an accident that caused her to move to California to live with her sister, Lida Crubaugh. Martha fell in 2011 after a late Christmas Eve church service and severely fractured a femur. She then required healthcare that caused her to live in a nursing home for the next six years. According to Martha’s wishes, her entire body was donated to UCLA’s medical center in the hope that some benefit to medical science would result.
Martha is survived by her sister; three daughters; four grand-children and two great-grand-daughters.
