Regional Basketball Tournaments fill Cougar Gym

The Region III 2A Basketball tournaments held at Leon High Gym brought in large crowds of fans for the last two weekends. Starting with the girls tournament on February 23 & 24 schools from Centerville, Tenaha, Woden and LaPoyner fans saw some exciting and well played basketball as the teams battled for a chance to go to San Antonio and the State Tournament. The games were all close, with LaPoyner beating Woden and Tenaha beating Centerville on Friday. On Saturday, LaPoynor and Tenaha battled it out. LaPoyner defeated Tenaha by the score of 53 to 42 to advance to the semifinal match against Regional I finalist Claude. LaPoynor won that game but lost to Martin’s Mill in the championship game.

The Region III 2A boys tournament held on March 2-3 brought some to the same fans back to Leon. The LaPoynor and Tenaha boys made the trip, but this time they faced different opponents. Shelbyville defeated LaPoynor 65-41 in the early game Friday while Grapeland won an overtime match against Tenaha 55-53. On Saturday, the Shelbyville Dragons took on the Grapeland Sandies and ran away with the game in the first half. Grapeland made a run late, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Dragons bounced the Sandies 54-40 to advance to the State Tournament this weekend. Shelbyville will play Stinnet West Texas on Friday and the winner will meet the winner of the Thorndale vs. Muenster game.
