George Ward, Sr. was born on September 27, 1937, in Bay City, Texas. He was raised there and served in the United States Navy. In 1975, George relocated to Centerville, Texas where he worked all over the city. One would usually find him around the Courthouse working as the groundskeeper or performing maintenance work and running errands for local business in Centerville.
On December 30, 2017, the Angel of Silence took George home to relieve him of his pain and be with his Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and one son, Jeff Hopkins.
He leaves to cherish his memories, Maggie Hopkins of Centerville; three sons, George Ward, Jr. (Latrice) of Centerville, J.V. Hopkins, Jr of Dallas and Bert Hopkins (Tonjah) of San Angelo; two daughters, Ruby Hopkins of Crockett and Sheenah Johnson (James) of Marshall; ten grandchildren, George, III, Geordyn, Grant, Jasmine, Jada, Malichi, Raigan, Jace, Kestara and Jayauna; one great-grandson, A’Mar, and a host of extended family and friends.
Homegoing services for George were held at 12 Noon, Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas. Pastor Earl Harris presented the eulogy, and interment followed in the Centerville Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Toreal Petty, Wayne Scott, Wayne Sims, Banza Langford, Brandon Smith and Matt Best. Honorary pallbearers: Curtis Phillips, J.V. Hopkins, Jr., Kevin Lewis, Bert Hopkins, James Johnson, Raynard Craig and Alex Phillips.
