Funeral services for Ewing John Lucas were on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at 2:00p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church. Bro. Billy Bob Evans officiated. Interment followed the services at Sardis Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Saturday from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home in Jewett.
Mr. Lucas passed away at Crestview Rehabilitation Center in Bryan, Texas, on Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
John was born on November 30, 1934 in West, Texas. He was the 7th child of Barney and Mary Jane (Ferguson) Lucas. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He joined the military in March 1953, served two tours in Vietnam, and traveled all over the world with the military. He retired with 20 years of service on March 31, 1973 with the rank of Sargent 1st Class E7. John married Faye Ellis Winn in 1968. After retirement from the military – he was involved with several businesses: auctioneering, antique shops, import business and check cashing.
John loved to be around people. He and Faye moved to Jewett in 1985 where he became active in the Jewett Republican Party; he co-chaired the organization for many years. John was also active in the Jewett VFW and the Jewett Chamber of Commerce. John also served as election judge for several years. He loved to travel, one of the highlight of his life was traveling to Australia in 2015.
John is preceded in death by his dear friend and companion, Mary Little in 2014, his wife of thirty-nine years, Faye in 2008, son John Lucas, Jr of England, grand-daughter Shauney Lucas of Whitesboro, his parents, and 6 siblings.
John is survived by daughter Karen L. Bain & husband Ed of Whitesboro, Tx, daughter Laura Phillips & husband Doug of Lexington Park, Maryland and her two children, son Patrick Hopkins of England, step-son Jim Winn & wife Polly of Dresden Tx, his only surviving sibling William B. Lucas, Grandson James (Trae) Winn, Granddaughters Amanda Winn Hopson and Jessica Lucas, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to John’s niece, Linda Lucas and special friends, Nancy Beddingfield, Rachel Fulton, and Doris Dyess for their companionship and outstanding care given to him during his illness.
